VertiCrop

Vertical farming is the viable alternative to conventional agriculture which makes the best possible use of limited space. By growing vertically instead of outwardly, vertical farming can expand food supplies without using more land. This has particular relevance in urban areas which have, until now, been overlooked for their agricultural use.

Valcent™ (eu) Ltd are pioneering this innovative technology with their fully developed and working product VertiCrop™. Unique in the field of Vertical farming, VertiCrop™grows plants in specially designed trays suspended from an overhead track. This allows the trays to rotate on a closed loop conveyor and in the process pass through a feeding station which provides water and nutrients. The plants benefit from an even airflow and equal light exposure. Any water and nutrient runoff from the feeding station is captured and recycled. This reduces consumption to as little as 5% of the uptake in conventional systems.

Valcent™ have successfully installed a working prototype of VertiCrop™ at Paignton Zoo in Devon (click here for info).

VertiCrop™ was listed in Time Magazine's Top 50 inventions of 2009. It came 16th behind such inventions as NASA's Ares Rocket (first place) and the AIDS vaccine.
